The Satir Model Leaedership Awards, presented by the Satir Institute of the Pacific, honour and recognize Satir Model Leaders, primarily in Asia and Europe, for their leadership and contribution to the development and spread of the Satir Model in their own countries. The awardees are recognized in their own countries for their contribution in training professionals in the Satir Model, their organizational roles in promoting the Satir Model, writing and resource development. The awards are given only once to any person in their lifetime. The awards will be offered by SIP every three to five years. The first awards were made in 2011. SIP was pleased to announce that there were 14 recipients.
In the 1980's Virginia Satir ran annual month long training workshops in Crested Butte, Colorado, primarily for therapists. A number of participants in the Pacific Northwest, including Dr. John Banmen, one of her principal trainers, formed the first Satir Institute in 1986. Other people were invited to join the Institute which offered seminars, workshops and training programs in Washington and British Columbia. 12 years later in 1998 it was decided to form a separate Institute in British Columbia. The Satir Institute of the Pacific (SIP) was registered as a non-profit society in BC in August 1998: Registration No.S - 38709 and later registered as a Charity with Revenue Canada: Registration number 858851082RR0001.
The initial focus of the Institute was on providing training programs for therapists and offering training for trainers. By November 1st 1998 there were 23 members. A Level 1 training program started in Sept 1998 and a Level 2 started in Nov 1998 and another Level 1 stared in Jan 1999. These have remained our successful core programs and have been presented regularly in the Lower Mainland, the Interior of BC and Vancouver Island. Other programs have included Special events, Level 3 programs, Train the Trainer programs and Advanced Residential Programs which have attracted many international participants. SIP members are now presenting training programs in more than a dozen countries around the world.
Gradually the Institute and demand for our programs and membership grew beyond the capacity of a purely volunteer organization. In 2007 the Institute opened its office in the Phoenix Centre in Surrey and contracted with a part time administrative assistant. There are now over 130 members spread through BC and in many countries throughout the world.
Since the Institute's inception The Wisdom Box, the Institute's Newsletter, has been published three or four times every year. Other SIP publications include the Satir Journal, a more academic publication, various training DVD's of live therapy sessions. These and other books about Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy are available from our Store.
